The Armed Forces Remembrance Day serves as a time of reflection and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s military personnel. In a significant move to support the welfare of retired officers and the families of fallen heroes, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has donated N75 million to the Nigerian Legion. This noble gesture was announced during the official launch of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund, held at the Lagos House in Marina on Monday.
The event, which was attended by Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government Barr. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and other dignitaries, set the stage for preparations toward the January 15, 2025 commemoration of Armed Forces Remembrance Day. Top military personnel, members of the State Executive Council, and officials of the Nigerian Legion were also present.
A Commitment to Welfare
During his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Legionnaires, particularly the elderly and the families of fallen soldiers. Acknowledging the sacrifices made by these heroes, he assured attendees that Legionnaires would continue to benefit from government programs aimed at improving their quality of life.
The Governor’s pledge to donate housing units to the Nigerian Legion was particularly well-received. These units, located in the Prince Abiodun Ogunleye Housing Estate in Ikorodu, are intended to provide shelter for vulnerable and elderly members of the Legion. Additionally, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced plans to supply security vehicles and equipment to enhance the Legion’s ongoing efforts in contributing to the safety and security of Lagos State.
Recognizing Sacrifice and Dedication
The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion, DCG Akeem Olawale Wolimoh, lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for his steadfast support. He highlighted how last year’s N50 million donation had been prudently utilized to improve the welfare of retired officers and the families of fallen heroes. DCG Wolimoh’s remarks emphasized the significance of such partnerships between government and the Legion in addressing the needs of those who have served the nation.
Symbol of Remembrance
The event also featured the decoration of Governor Sanwo-Olu and other key government officials with the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem. This act symbolizes a shared commitment to honoring the memories of fallen heroes and supporting their families.
A Call to Action
As the countdown to January 15, 2025, begins, the launch of the Emblem and Appeal Fund serves as a call to action for all Nigerians to contribute to the welfare of those who have sacrificed so much for the country’s peace and security. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s contributions underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s heroes are never forgotten.
Through this initiative, Lagos State is setting a benchmark for other states to follow, ensuring that the legacy of the Armed Forces’ sacrifices continues to be honored and preserved for generations to come.
