U.S. Senator Rand Paul Endorses Elon Musk for House Speaker

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has publicly endorsed Elon Musk as a potential candidate for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Thursday, Senator Paul highlighted that the Speaker does not need to be a sitting member of Congress.

“The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress. Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk… think about it… nothing’s impossible. (Not to mention the joy of seeing the establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds),” Paul remarked.

Paul’s comments come amidst growing tension within the Republican Party over Speaker Mike Johnson’s handling of a year-end spending bill.

The controversial spending measure, backed by Speaker Johnson, proposes funding the government through March 14 and includes over $100 billion for disaster relief, $10 billion for farmer assistance, and other reforms. The bill has faced backlash from prominent Republicans, including President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, who described it as “the most foolish and inept thing” Republicans could have supported.

Elon Musk, recently tapped by Trump to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the incoming administration, also criticized the bill. Musk urged voters to oppose lawmakers supporting the measure, labeling it “outrageous” and calling for its rejection.

As tensions mount, Speaker Johnson’s team is reportedly working on a backup spending plan to avoid a government shutdown ahead of Friday’s deadline, according to Politico.

The endorsement of Musk, a figure known for his disruptive approach, has sparked conversation about unconventional leadership in Congress during a politically charged period.
